*Home>>>Fish>>>Is it wrong to feed my aquarium fish fry (xipho) only spirulina algae?

Question:
I've red that Spirulina is very good for all fish because it makes them stronger and more resistant to possible diseases. I've noticed that they eat it and enjoy it quite well, and they grow very fast. Is it ok to feed them just that until tey are big enough for puting them along with my other fish?

Answer:
Without knowing what species I cannot give a definitive answer.
Ingeneral, Spirulina is an excellent food. Some fish fry will need additional protein sources. In general, most fish will do well with Spirulina alone, but to be safe, add a nice shrimp or fish meal based protein food for extra nutrition.

Any herbivorous fish can live a long life with just a Spirulina based diet even as an adult.

Spirulina has no special properties that makes fish any stronger or healthier. It is a good diet in that is offers a lot of nutrients and is easily digested by most fish. Based on your description, it sounds like they are thriving on this diet, so if you want add a protein mix once per week, but you will probably be fine changing nothing.

The human grade spirulina is even better. I know when I used it for jellyfish culture I used a source from a health food store as it was cheaper than the aquaculture version.
