Question: How many Irregular verbs are there in the English language? Answer: If by irregular verb, you mean all verbs that do not just add '-ed' in both the simple past tense and the past participle, then it's quite a high number. However, the link supplied to '470' irregular verbs is a little misleading. Included as two verbs here are pairs such as 'build' and 'jerry-build'. By most measures, these would be regarded as essentially the same verb. So, some are counted twice or more on this list. Further, it is not stated whether this is US or UK English. 'Dive' and 'fit' are regular verbs in Britain, but irregular in the US, for example. So, my guess is that the number is probably around 300 - give or take. (And those last two are both irregular!) |
