Question:
I've noticed that in Grand Slams, some seeded players have elected to participate in singles and doubles match...

for example, martina hingis played a gruesome match against Stosur yesterday in Singles match...and is today playing in a mixed doubles match..

instead of playing doubles, arent they better off be rested so they're fresh playing the next match (quarterfinals)??

Answer:
That is correct. Most top singles players will not be playing singles in Melbourne. However Martina Hingis has had 3 years away from tennis so she was as much practice as possible. Also her body does not have any wear and tear on it from the 2005 tennis season because she did not play it.

You will find that more top players will play mixed or doubles at Wimbledon due to grass byt nature the points there are fast and short and very quick due to the fast speed at which the ball travels on the grass. Also on grass there are not a lot of tournmanents so players want the extra practice at Wimbledon. I hope I helped.
